Hi David,
As far as I am concerned its the "quality traffic" that makes the money.
I would far sooner have 50 people visit my site and 4 buy, than 1000 visitors and 1 buyer.
Things have changed. People don't just type "car" now, but "red second hand car London"
I have no idea what the competition for " car " is but I am sure the "red second hand car London"
would be under 2 million.
If this is the case then I look at the number 1 spot and spy on it.
I use some software called Market Samurai
I analyses the web page and tells you all the details about it like: number of backlinks, the age of the sites, no follow,registered on yahoo,where links came from.etc
So if I see that an ezine article for example has helped - then I will write an article.
Basically I do 5% more than the number 1 spot the same way - because google has put it there, I will do more of what google likes
I think you have to look at the internet through googles eyes - not your own, or mine, or anybody elses.
I got a number 9 spot for a keyword that had 6.1 million in competition.
It has slipped to number 14 now - only because I have done nothing with it to maintain it.
It was an experiment anyway for a friend - so I wasn't too bothered.

If your keyword only has 23 people a month typing that keyword, chances are there is no money in it.
However if you type the keyword in google and there are adsense adds on the right hand side then someone is paying to advertise - perhaps you have found a little gold mine.
People only tend to advertise where the money is.
I had better stop before this turns into a novel.
