Confused about the validity of search engine submision business site
I recently paid to join a search engine submision site. They claim to then submit my website to over 100,000 search engines, but I will have to wait 2 to 6 weeks for my site to be indexed and ranked. Then somewhere else I read that you dont have to submit your website to any search engine as the bots will automatically come along and index and rank your website. Therefore, they claim that the SE submission sites are bogus. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEGE OR EXPERIENCE ON WHICH OF THESE TWO OPINIONS IS TRUE? I would appreciate any feed back

Hi Elizabeth,
In my experience most of these submision services are useless. Just because a site has been submitted does not mean that it will show up anywhere near the top on any search engine. Concentrate on making sure that your site has lots of relative content. Frequent updates also help. Unfortunately, when it comes to SEO there is no magic bullet.

The second is true, keywords make your website more popular, and obviously the more hits the quicker you get to the front page and then maybe rank a number 1!!

Thanx to Tom and Paolo for your input. It does make sense. One more question tho. Does one have to submit a new website to have it even indexed by a search engine? Or is this unecessary.

Well, submit your site to various web site directories, article directories, web 2.0 sites like squidoo,
do blog reviews, posting forums with your site link in the signature, those are the method you need
to do for SEO.
SEO is actually two part: on page and off page.
On page means the structure, the content, the overall design of your site. Make you have
some targeted keywords on your home page title, meta description, meta keywords, alt image
tags etc.
off page means getting links from other website that points back to your site.
Google takes more emphasis on off page SEO rather on page.
I have been doing SEO for about a year now and I have several web pages
that rank top20 in Google.
