Why are people afraid to admit that they are not making money in their business.

Just curious, I would like to get different opinions.  It is a well known fact that 97% of people are failing, but I would guess that 97% of people that I meet tell me that they are doing well.  Something just does not sound right about that.

So far, I am not failing - but I don't consider myself doing "well". It's primarily due to my own effort..or lack thereof! I think though, especially if it is MLM or an "opportunity", people are afraid to say they aren't making money for fear that others will not be interested in their opportunity.
Excellent response Jene. People always want to give the appearance of success even when it's minimal. It helps to validate their decision to be a business owner.
One of the driving reasons to get into MLM is to generate an alternate stream of revenue or to create a primary source of revenue. MLM requires constantly bringing more people into your respective group/team. How can you tell someone that they can make money in your MLM then in the same sentence admit that YOU aren't.

You are correct in that in most MLM's it's only the top 2-3% that are making signficant money and almost everyone else is making very little or nothing. Most MLM's are "top heavy" that way (this is especially true of binaries and modified binaries).

I'm lucky in that I'm with a MLM that has a solid "middle class". This means that the sum of the money being made by the larger group of people is more than the sum of the money being made by the top few. It's rare but there are companies out that like that.

Why do people make such claims only tell can tell you the answer . I've networked on lines for years and have earned and loss money . Some months ago I was hit for a loss of $400 but thank God I got my money back ! Sadly some are not so fortunate. I have learned to focus on that 3% who succeed online .

Two comments on this topic, Go to Japan, people are not lazy.
97% of people are failing because they want it now, instead of using Jeff Olson's theory - Successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people aren't willing to do. In other words, they're lazy. You have to plant your seeds, cultivate, and then harvest, not plant your seeds, and expect to harvest and reap the benefits, it takes a little work. Read Jeff Olson's book, "The Slight Edge". I'm not asking you to go buy it, you can get it at the Library too. If you're not doing well, it's because of the time you put into your business, put a little more in and eventually you wont ever have to go to work again. That's why I think my team is so successful, because we meet together and I don't let them give up. I help them find their goals. Americans are lazy. Just get out of your comfort zone and stop listening to people that say "the people at the top only make the money and everybody else makes squat". Oh I forgot that they are know it all's. I don't knock anybody's business because I know network marketing is an amazing opportunity and all these companies are probably great ones to be a part of, mine happens to be with Mr. Stonecipher and the rest of the Pre-Paid Legal Team. I love it and you would too.

I also don't think that people failing is because they don't have success like their sponsor's told them, I believe it's because they don't want to put any effort into it and/or maybe their sponsor's don't help them. That could be the key.

Here's to the she shine lady, I hope she was able to afford her daughter's cheerleading outfit, trip and tuition.

Carrie Hogue made several good points.
#1 we do not ask people in traditional business how much they make.
#2 It's no one else's business how much we make in our business

There is a fine line between telling someone what you make in Network Marketing and enticing. FTC says we cannot entice people into our business by making income claims.

People who ask "how much are you making" - are really asking the wrong question. (There are those in a distinct category who think they have to know as part of the criteria of whether YOU qualify to sponsor them or not - which is not for this topic of discussion).

If I tell you I am making $5000.00 a month in my business, does that mean you will make the same? No! It's not even a fair question to begin with, much less appropriate.

Network Marketing is not an instant ATM machine, which all of you here know... It takes time and it takes developing skills. When someone asks me now 'how much do you make", I tell them that is irrelevant because we have different skill sets. We will teach you our system if you are interested in building a business.

Same thing when someone asks you how many people are on your team? . We all start somewhere and unless you 'bought a position' or got 'a deal' in someone's downline. we all join and have 'zero' team members that we have personally sponsored... If I told you it took a year and 3 months for me to sponsor my first person, is that what you would expect to happen for you? I hope not! If I told you I signed xx people a month in my business, does that mean you should expect to do the same? I hope not!

Point is: As Carrie also stated - do not let your prospect gauge his/her success at this business to that of anyone else. None of us have the same skill level.... many of us come in with NO skills at all to do this business properly.

It doesn't matter whether you are making a check or not.. it does not matter if you have sponsored anyone yet or not... what matters is this: there has to be a system in place that your team duplicates and if your prospect is willing to take the time to learn those skills and keep going and growing... they will have success.

Oh and by the way, doing good and making money in a business does not necessarily mean the same thing. I was doing good at learning the skills long before I ever started seeing a check..... I never got concerned with whether my upline was making a check or whether I was the first or the hundredth on his team. I knew from the start my business would be based on learning the system skills provided and the sweat equity I was willing to put in.
~Jennifer

PS: Self development is part of the skills process... That's an excellent recommendation by Jeffrey and Kimberly to read "The Slight Edge" written by Jeff Olson.
i think its lock of confidence..
